Beings

Free

Artist: Maryalice Carroll

I am interested in what happens to the body when it is overwhelmed with feeling by finding acquiescence in physical discomfort. Each of these lumpy beings is covered in pores (holes) that are oozing bodily fluid (glaze). The surfaces of the clay objects offer a deeper analogy to being overstimulated to the point of discomfort.

MARYALICE CARROLL

As a hyper-sensitive person, both emotionally and physically, I’ve grown keenly aware of my body’s reaction to stress. My skin starts to feel almost electric and crunchy, and I feel every pore on my body. Every single pore, and each one tingling; this is overwhelming enough to bring me to tears and make me sweat. Despite its severity, this feeling is invisible; in this clay, I attempt to create physical representations of invisible sensations.
