Memory Glitch

Artist: Roxy Erickson

Whether it’s working with society gendered, feminine materials or the fact that I primarily make portraits of the women in my life, being a woman impacts all aspects of my work. It is also extremely important to me to join the current cultural conversation and provide my own commentary on women’s rights and our place in the world.

ABOUT THE ART

Working figuratively, specifically in portraits, allows me to create a mirror for my viewers to be able to see themselves in the story I am painting and hopefully invoke a shared emotional memory. Working with the figure also allows me to take control of the gaze of the viewer while tapping into the capability of painting, giving a nod to the historical tradition. In my work you are meant to be lured in by the bright, saturated colors, but left with an unsettling feeling, inciting a false sense of joy that is quickly overshadowed by a subtle melancholia.

Working with only female identifying models and cliché gendered feminine motifs such as florals or painting in shades of pink my work draws your attention to the female gaze and the gaze cast upon us, providing my own commentary on consent and our place in the world. Now more than ever people want to see other people and connect to that shared human experience, so figurative work is the best method of painting for me to express my message.

It is extremely important to me to join the current cultural conversation and provide my own commentary on women’s rights and our place in the world.
