Craig Colorusso: Liminal Spaces
FreeBest known for his immersive sound installations, Craig Colorusso revisits and expands his practice in his newest body of work, Liminal Spaces, to include new shadow-and-light artifacts. Once embodied and fleeting, his work is to be experienced, not captured, but only in memory. Dissecting and remixing his previous works, Colorusso reflects on notions of permanence and the temporal to reveal remnants of moments in time.
Two of Colurusso’s renowned installations, CUBEMUSIC and Sun Boxes, come together with a brand new body of work at MIXD gallery to illustrate the vastness and similarities between day and night, light and shadow, and the liminal space humans occupy among them.
Powered by the sun’s rays, Sun Boxes will extend beyond the gallery’s confines to the heart of uptown Pinnacle, droning and singing to and along with the sun, while CUBEMUSIC will transform the gallery space into a web of sound, light, and shadow. The gallery will be illuminated by the negative spaces and shapes cut from six large aluminum cubes, meant to evoke the many disparate, complex parts that shape our daily lives and to encourage us to slow down and listen. The sounds emanating from Colorusso’s works are all original compositions made with bowed guitar, bass clarinet, and electronics. In addition to the in-gallery display, Colorusso will activate the gallery and the surrounding neighborhood.
The Sun Boxes will be on view outside the MIXD gallery each Saturday during the exhibition run, with a rotating suite of community events, workshops, and performances.
