Kathryn Smith (she/ella) is a Colombian/American potter. Allyship and empathy are important motivators for her work—so much so that she incorporates allyship into the name of her pottery business (Ally Kat Pottery). Whether it’s the message she’s wanting to send through her pieces, or just the way a pot feels in your hand – she wants her pottery to make people feel seen and appreciated. She started her pottery journey taking community classes in 2021 and primarily focuses on throwing functional pieces on the wheel. In her professional life, she’s a lawyer and corporate social responsibility professional. When she is not doing her day job, there is a good chance she’s doing something pottery related.

ABOUT THE ART
“I’ve been wanting to make miniature pottery for a while. I follow a couple potters who exclusively do miniature pots, and I wanted to see if I could translate some of my signature shapes and designs to this tiny scale. For this series I focused my designs on miniature florals, stripes, and bold colors.
Working on a smaller scale is an interesting practice in relying on classic wheel throwing techniques, but finding alternative ways to accomplish it. For example, rather than using my hand to center the clay before throwing the piece, I needed to center it with just my fingers. I used my finger tips and several tools to make the tiny shapes come to life.

I also used a tiny wheel to throw most of these. This allowed me to have the wheel on a table top and was kinder on my back. Having the tiny wheel was great because my husband and I were displaced due to a tornado, so I could still throw these tiny pots just about anywhere.
I really enjoyed focusing on these tiny pots. I probably won’t do it exclusively but I’ll continue to mess around with it.”
