Timothy Smith

Timothy T. Smith’s sculptural practice explores the tension between organic form and constructed space. Working across metal, wood, stone, and digitally fabricated components, he combines traditional methods of making with contemporary processes to create abstract structures that move between the anatomical, architectural, and biomorphic.

Skeletal frameworks, torsos, branching structures, and wing-like fins recur throughout his work, but rarely resolve into complete forms. Smith uses cropping, fragmentation, repetition, and extension to suggest that each sculpture is part of a larger structure continuing beyond what is physically present. Edges become points of departure; forms appear to enter, exit, or expand beyond their own boundaries.

Central to the work is this relationship between mass and interruption—between what is defined and what remains implied. Rather than treating the sculpture as a closed object, Smith constructs forms that suggest movement, direction, and continuation through the surrounding space.
