A Singular Humanity

A Singular Humanity explores identity, empathy, and the quiet narratives that emerge through the act of drawing. Guided by intuition rather than intention, each work allows lines to lead the image forward, revealing human faces from shifting angles and emotional states. Influenced by a lifelong career in animation, the paintings suggest movement and story within a single, static frame. Ultimately, the work is completed by the viewer—each interpretation shaped by personal experience, each reading equally valid, together reflecting the many facets of our shared humanity.

An Artist’s Return

An intimate, intuitive exploration of what it means to be human.

ABOUT THE ART

A Singular Humanity reflects my personal vision of humanity— shaped by an unconventional childhood, a deep sense of empathy, and a lifelong creative practice. As I begin each work, I search for an identity to emerge organically within the image, resisting the urge to impose preconceived ideas or overthink the process. Instead, I allow the lines themselves to guide the drawing, following where the image wants to go rather than directing it with conscious intention.

My more than fifty-year career in animation has profoundly influenced this approach. Animation is rooted in movement and storytelling, and both are central to my fine art practice. While each painted image is technically static, it suggests motion through time and space—revealing a human face from multiple angles and emotional states, as if seen in succession.

As I search for the subject’s identity, a narrative begins to take shape. These stories can become layered and complex, evolving subtly throughout the process. What I find most compelling occurs after the work is complete: every viewer brings their own story to the image. Each interpretation is valid, shaped by the viewer’s lived experience, and together they form a shared yet singular humanity.
